I recently learned that the name of the Azalea flower comes from a Greek word for “dry, withered, or parched.”
Some say it’s because the plant does well in dry sandy soil. As someone with a horribly black thumb, I have no idea if that’s true or not! (Gardeners feel free to weigh in)
But the inherent contradiction in that definition struck a cord with me today.
It’s a reminder that:
1) Beautiful things can still grow in difficult environments.
2) It’s up to us to make the most of what we DO have.
3) The ability to adapt is an underappreciated superpower.
