Do you enjoy giving and receiving “feedback?” Probably not. For most people the word has a negative connotation. It brings to mind uncomfortable conversations and criticism wrapped in a sandwich of fake praise.
Kim Scott, author of the best selling leadership book “Radical Candor,” recently shared a suggestion – call it “guidance” instead of “”feedback.”
Brilliant.
Offering feedback sounds nit-picky and critical.
Offering guidance sounds forward-looking and helpful.
Asking for feedback implies you value someone’s opinion.
Asking for guidance suggests you value their wisdom and advice.
It’s a subtle but powerful difference that we’d all do well to adopt.
As I was thinking about this subtle but powerful difference, three a question popped into my mind:
What if we collected “customer guidance” instead of “customer feedback”?
Would calling it that change the kind of information ask for?
Would it change how people in the business respond and weave customer insight into their work?
I honestly don’t know the answer. What do you think?
