Word Nerd Wednesday: Opposite

The opposite of big is small. The oppposite of open is closed. Not every word has a clear opposite, though. I’m wrestling with one such word now and would love input from my logophile tribe. Here’s the situation…

Lack of clarity is a barrier to customer experience transformation. Having a 1-word label for this issue would be more elegant than saying “lack of…” over and over, but the words I’ve brainstormed so far don’t feel right. When something isn’t clear/lacks clarity it can be…

  • Hidden/Invisible (unable to be seen)

  • Vague/Ambiguous (insufficient detail)

  • Confusing (detail is hard to interepret)

These aren’t wrong, but they don’t feel complete, either. There may not be a polar opposite for “clearness” or “clarity.” My questions to you are…

  1. Are there other, better words I’m not thinking of?

  2. If you had to choose a word knowing they are all imperfect, which would you go with?
